It was difficult to draw my game on paper at first, but once I started using graph paper it became much easier. All of the pieces of the game are one block in size, so that makes it easy to sketch out on graph paper.
I think it is important to sketch out your game before trying to create them on the computer because it is similar to outlining an essay before writing it. If you just jump right in trying to create the whole thing without writing down your general ideas, then your game will lack direction and consistency. It is also possible to see what level designs will/will not work when sketching them out so that you do not waste time creating ones that don't work on the computer.
